I’ve been watching video after video about this and I’m still undecided if helicopter flying is worth it….and I’m getting more and more convincing thats it’s not worth it. Compared to being and fixed wing pilot and flying commercially. There’s tons of videos about happy commercial pilots on RUclips..none really about great lifestyle on heli pilots……🤦🏻‍♂️💀🤷🏻‍♂️

What then can I do to get right into them as International student and if you are aware of ViSAs what would you recommend?

I’ve been flying an r44 in Msfs 2020 and i watched so many videos on how to just start it correctly. This is after I just started flying around without a care in the world and my engine stalls and now I’m autorotating and I actually landed safely. Even though I knew it was a sim. 1 it was a night flight 2 it’s in vr so if felt so so real. After that I started looking at sop for the 44. One of things I noticed was I didn’t let the cylinder head temp get in the green. Also I was cruising with the rpm set to 23 flying in Hawaii. I’m practicing now for when I actually start taking lessons

Few years ago I watched an R44 taking off from a dolly. The pilot rocked it forward on the skids, rotor tips missing the ground by not very much. Once he cleared the dolly, he did a quick stop low to the ground and then did a hard 180 degree pedal turn, nosed it over and departed the airport. To make matters worse he had passengers taking them on a sight seeing tour. I really thought I was going to hear metal crunching and parts flying on that one.

I took a coworker up in my Enstrom once and he told his wife about it, so naturally the wife wanted to fly, too. But she was so overweight that the seat belt wouldn't even reach around her. Thankfully, my coworker gave me her measurement and I could measure the seatbelt length without her being on site. Yep. Touchy subject, indeed.

There is a RUclipsr that is in a r22 and he lands in his little hometown in the Midwest and gets McDonald’s or a burger or ice cream and has well over 100k followers that mostly think it’s the coolest in the world but I can’t fathom as a helicopter pilot/airplane pilot myself that is any good for our industry. I would imagine his insurance company would pull the plug on him if they saw it. What are your thoughts if you seen this particular RUclipsr?

@@HelicopterGround @mattylp8 Most clips don't show any type of orbiting reconnaisance and definitely no type of protected area to keep any bystanders from walking into the LZ at the time of landing or even cool down to where someone could inadvertently walk into the tail rotor as its spinning down. Just curious on your take. At 340k subscribers it could send the wrong message to a lot of people imo.

Thank you, good points all well presented. I wonder what are your thoughts on some of the movie industry flying we see online these days? Those guys all claim every flight is rigorously planned out in advance, and practiced many times, but they seem to live in the avoid curve most of the time. They’re generally very experienced folks, and am sure most film directors have no interest in seeing helicopters flown ‘normally’, but I can’t be the only one feeling uncomfortable watching some of those manoeuvres…. Appreciate different folks have different attitudes to risk management, which governs all of life for sure, but as you say we don’t want ‘newbies’ thinking this flying is normal….. I’ve grown increasingly uncomfortable watching some of the helicopter (and fixed wing) related social media content. In a previous life of around 6000 hours operating mainly twin turbine helicopters we would always lift into the hover, check power reserves, t’s & p’s, Nr, all lights out on the caution panel, and only then transition into the manufacturer’s approved take off profile. These profiles of speed and height above ground were designed to keep you, your passengers and the aircraft safe in the event of a malfunction during the take off. Landing profiles were flown for the same reason. And it didn’t matter whether you were full of ordinary passengers just going to work, high powered company management, or a medical case needing a hospital, we stuck to the profiles. Better a few seconds late in this life, than way too early into the next 😊. Oh yes, and the older I get, the lower and faster I used to fly!

I would like a second option on something I would like to do: The 121 air operators have a Dispatcher operations, But I would to exercise my Ham radio tech license as a PRIVATE PILOT and supplement what the airlines do when it comes the aircraft dispatcher...NOTE:This DIYer/PRIVATE Pilot/aircraft dispatcher would be considered another tool in the tool bag for safer flight and not to talk to some stranger on 146.52 "Hey look I am aircraft" Using a Radio like the Kenwood TM-D710GA, an independent power source like a motorcycle battery Beaconing on 144.39 one side of the radio so that way the DIYer aircraft dispatcher can text message/SMS through the APRS network and a freed up voice radio requiring DTMF in order to connect to the Either the echolink nodes or the Allstar nodes on the right side for my "make shift aircraft dispatcher" *both parties the pilot and the "DIYer aircraft dispatcher" require a Tech Ham radio license* The "DIYer aircraft dispatcher" requires a SIP phone(can be purchased for 5$)+Internet connection in order to connect to remote radio stations, via elcholink or allstar...Check out [www.aprs.fi]
